Whether you call them Gillgetters, mini-pontoons, compact pontoons or Qwest, Apex Marine has the size for you... The original Gillgetter compact pontoon boat was released in 1990 by Mellinger Boats, and consisted of a two 15 inch diameter pontoons with a 4 ft x 8 ft deck that was finished with two fishing seats. The Gillgetter was originally designed as an affordable two-person fishing boat with tiller steering. Its greatest attribute was it could easily be trailered yet possessed the superior platform characteristics of a pontoon boat. As demand grew for the 'compact pontoon' concept, Gillgetter expanded to several models with 6 ft and 7 ft widths, with lengths ranging from 10 to 20 feet. Gillgetter pontoons earned a reputation for solid construction. In 2003, Apex Marine acquired the assets of Mellinger Boats. Owner of Apex Marine, Mark Dupuie, had helped develop the original dealer network for Mellinger. Dupuie also owns American Soft Trim, Inc., a company that manufactures OEM and aftermarket marine seating products. The goal has been to build on Gillgetter's solid reputation, expand the dealer network and brand presence, while exploring new markets for compact pontoon boats. Apex set out to build the best “Little” pontoon boats on the market. Apex Marine remains unique among pontoon manufacturers, by focusing solely on the compact pontoon boat market. In 2006, Apex introduced the Qwest line for those who need or want a smaller pontoon boat but desire high end furnishings. This was the first and remains the only luxury compact pontoon boat on the market.
