Spring Into Sailing: Basic Checklist For Preparing Your Boat For Boating Season

The weather’s warming and the water’s calling! Boating season is right around the corner, which means now is the time to start preparing your craft so that you can get out on the water faster when the weather allows. If you’re ready to start getting your boat water-ready, we’ve got you covered! This blog will cover a basic checklist of what you need to do to ensure that your boat is in sailing shape just in time for boating season!

Engine & Mechanical Systems

  • Change Engine Oil & Filters: Replace engine oil, oil filters, and fuel filters.
  • Check Fluids: Check transmission, hydraulic steering, and coolant levels.
  • Spark Plugs: Replace spark plugs if necessary.
  • Inspect Belts & Hoses: Check for wear, cracks, or loose belts.
  • Impeller: Replace the raw-water pump impeller, as these should be changed annually.
  • Fuel System: Check for leaks and inspect fuel lines.

Electrical System

  • Batteries: Reinstall, clean terminals, check water levels (if applicable), and fully charge.
  • Lights: Test all navigation and anchor lights.
  • Electronics: Test VHF radio, GPS, and fishfinder.
  • Bilge Pump: Test bilge pumps and automatic switches for proper function.

Hull & Deck

  • Clean & Wax: Wash the hull, deck, and topsides with a mild detergent. Apply a fresh coat of wax.
  • Inspect Hull: Check for blisters, cracks, or damage to the hull, and inspect the rudder and propeller.
  • Zincs: Replace zinc anodes to prevent corrosion.
  • Seacocks & Drains: Open and close all seacocks to ensure they move freely; check that drain plugs and scuppers are clear.
  • Canvas & Vinyl: Clean and protect canvas covers and upholstery.

Safety & General Maintenance

  • Safety Equipment: Check life jackets, fire extinguishers, flares, and the first-aid kit for expiration dates.
  • Dock Lines & Anchors: Inspect dock lines for chafe and check the anchor rode.
  • Registration: Ensure registration is current and on board.
  • Trailer Inspection: If applicable, check trailer tires, lights, bearings, and winch.

Post-Launch Checklist

  • Check for Leaks: Ensure the bilge pump is off, and check for water coming through hoses or fittings.
  • Engine Start: Check for proper water flow/raw water intake and normal temperature/oil pressure.
  • Test Run: Perform a slow, steady shake-down cruise to check steering and shifting.
